Description:
This is a fun introduction to woodworking
where you will learn some basic woodworking skills and have something to show for it in the end. The course will introduce
you to shop safety, woodworking tools, project planning, joinery techniques, and basic finishing. You will choose one
of several projects that include, among others, a Shaker style wall cabinet, a sitting bench, a rocking horse, and others.
Audience:
This course is intended for individuals
with little or no woodworking experience. Students who do have some or extensive experience can serve as team leaders or can
select more challenging projects

Course Objectives:
At the end of this course each student will:
- Be able to identify all the safety hazards of a typical woodworking shop and how to safely avoid personal injury and
equipment damage.
- Project Planning
- Be able to identify the major characteristics of wood, how it is processed, how it is sold, and how to select for
a project.
- Understand basic principles of design. Students will demonstrate their ability by working from a plan and will use
a bill of materials.
- Woodworking Tools
- Understand the use and selection of most common hand tools. Students will demonstrate their understanding of proper
use and care of selected hand tools.
- Be familiar with the use and operation of common stationary and handheld power tools. Students will demonstrate proper
and safe operation of selected power tools.
- Be able to identify common joinery techniques. Students will demonstrate their understanding of joinery by completing
at least one example in their project.
- Be able to describe typical finishes used in woodworking. Students will be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages
of each. Students will demonstrate their knowledge by the application of at least one type finish.
- Using skills and knowledge gained in previous objectives complete at least one wooden project of their choosing.
